Maa Durga represents the powerful, protective aspect of the Divine Mother. The Sanskrit word Durgā is associated with that which is difficult to approach or cross, and with the image of a fortress or stronghold—a powerful symbol of protection and refuge.

Just as a strong fort protects from all directions, Maa Durga is traditionally worshipped as the Divine Power that protects us from dangers, difficulties, negative influences and forces that obstruct our progress.

The deeper message of Durga worship is that many obstacles are not only external. Fear, anger, jealousy, confusion, insecurity, laziness and negative tendencies can also become obstacles in our lives. The Durga Sukta, a Vedic prayer associated with safe passage through difficulties, beautifully expresses this aspiration: may the Divine carry us across hardships and dangers like a boat carrying us safely across a river.
